I Tested Instagram's New Carousel Captions. Here's What I Learned

Instagram recently introduced a simple but surprisingly useful update for carousel posts: you can now add captions to individual slides.

At first glance, it seems like a small change, but after testing it, I found it makes carousel posts much more engaging. Instead of relying on one long caption beneath the post, each image or video can include its own explanation, giving viewers context as they swipe.

My Test

To try it out, I created a carousel with Instagram tips and added a short caption to each slide instead of putting everything in the main caption. Each slide built on the previous one, turning the carousel into a step-by-step tutorial.

I also tested it with a service showcase, using each slide to highlight a different offering and explain what made it valuable.

What Worked Well

The biggest advantage is context.

Many people swipe through carousel posts without reading the main caption. Adding captions directly to each slide keeps the explanation where it's most useful.

For realtors, each slide can walk buyers through a listing, highlighting standout features room by room. Restaurants can use slide captions to describe menu items, ingredients, or chef recommendations. Service-based businesses can explain different services or answer common customer questions without overwhelming viewers with one long caption.

Creators benefit too. Travel creators can share details about each destination, photographers can tell the story behind every image, and educators can build tutorials that are easier to follow.

A Few Limitations

The feature is still new, so not everyone realizes slide captions exist. Some users also swipe quickly without stopping to read.

Keep captions short and easy to scan. Your main caption is still the best place for your call to action, hashtags, and any additional details.

Is It Worth Using?

I think so.

If your goal is to educate, tell a story, or showcase products or services, slide captions make carousel posts much easier to follow. They help businesses explain what they're offering while giving creators a more natural way to guide viewers through their content.

Final Thoughts

Not every Instagram update changes how people create content, but this one has the potential to make carousel posts more useful.

The key isn't adding captions simply because they're available, it's using them to tell a better story and provide context at the right moment.

If you regularly create carousel posts, this feature is worth experimenting with. After testing it myself, I can see it becoming a valuable addition for businesses and creators alike.

A Quick Book Update

Outside of client work, I've been spending a lot of time on the next edition of Instagram for Dummies, and it's exciting to see everything coming together.

One of the most rewarding parts of writing the book is testing new Instagram features firsthand before deciding which ones truly deserve a place in the next edition. Some become game changers, while others are simply nice additions.

Thanks to everyone who's reached out asking when the new edition will be available. I can't wait to share more updates soon.
