Instagram never seems to slow down. Just when creators get comfortable with one set of features, another batch of updates arrives. The latest changes are particularly interesting because they focus on giving users more control over how they present their content and tell their stories.
If you haven’t checked Instagram recently, here are three updates worth exploring.
Multiple Captions for Carousel Posts
This has been a long-asked for update: the ability to add a separate caption to each image or video within a carousel post. Instead of relying on a single caption to explain everything, you can now provide context for every slide.
This opens up plenty of creative possibilities. Travel creators can describe each destination as viewers swipe through their photos. Educators can create step-by-step tutorials with explanations attached to every slide. Businesses can showcase several products in one carousel while including individual details for each item.
It is a small change on the surface, but it makes carousel posts much more flexible. Rather than simply being a collection of images, they can become richer stories that unfold one slide at a time.
Rearranging Your Profile Grid
Another long-requested feature is the ability to rearrange your profile grid.
For years, creators have wanted more control over how their profiles look without deleting posts or starting over. Now you can reorganize your existing content so your profile better reflects your current brand, portfolio, or aesthetic.
This is especially valuable for photographers, artists, small businesses, and anyone who uses Instagram as a visual showcase. Your newest post no longer has to dictate the appearance of your profile. Instead, you can curate your grid to highlight your best work.
Continued Improvements to the Edits App
Instagram has also continued expanding its Edits app with new tools designed to streamline video production. The app now includes additional editing features, improved creator insights, and workflow enhancements that make it easier to produce short-form video without jumping between multiple apps.
As Instagram continues investing in video, these updates suggest the company wants creators to have a complete editing experience within its own ecosystem. If you regularly create Reels, the Edits app is becoming increasingly worth a look.
Working on the Next Instagram for Dummies
Speaking of Instagram updates, many readers have asked whether there will be a new edition of Instagram for Dummies. I am happy to say that work is well underway. In fact, I only have one more chapter to write!
Writing a book about Instagram is always an interesting challenge because the platform changes so frequently. Features appear, evolve, and occasionally disappear before the next edition even reaches bookstores. That means every new version requires careful review to ensure readers receive guidance that reflects how Instagram actually works today.
Many of the recent updates, including multiple carousel captions, profile grid reordering, and creator workflow improvements, are exactly the kinds of features being evaluated for inclusion in the next edition.
It is still a work in progress, but I am excited to share more as the manuscript comes together. My goal remains the same as always, which is to help readers make the most of Instagram whether they are using it for business, creativity, or simply staying connected with friends and family.
Looking Ahead
Instagram continues to evolve at a remarkable pace, and keeping up with every change can sometimes feel like a full-time job. Fortunately, not every update requires you to rethink your strategy completely. Some simply give you better tools to communicate, organize your content, and express your creativity.
In the meantime, I would love to hear which of these new features you are most excited to try and what questions you would like to see answered in the upcoming edition of Instagram for Dummies, which is now available for pre-order!
